Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in television shows in the role of Jackie Harris, a character which was played by her mother in the ABC comedy Roseanne. She did not consider a career in acting until after she had reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being concerned about the adverse impact stress might have. Perry admitted that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school. She began doing it to meet new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was able to land small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, led her back to California to return, where she started performing in the stage. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother as part of The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry had a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. That same year she portrayed a child character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a younger version. Despite having a family connection to the character she received the role via an audition.
